Theodore Shorter Jr.

Special Guest Theodore Shorter Jr. Author of “Lovingly and Orderly: A Son’s Lament”.   This book pierces into a subject matter that has and/or can affect the relationships of many families.  It’s a topic that reflects how some people and families react when they’ve lost a family member.   What and how these reactions evolve and effect the division of a family estate.  Instead of bringing a family together in unity to equitably communicate and apply the wishes of the lost family member.  If you or someone you know has been impacted by this issue and concern spread the news to listen in on today’s show…

Theodore Shorter Jr. is sharing his story of an unprecedented and passionate real life account of a devoted son. Mr. Shorter was born and raised in Chicago, IL on the Near West Side of the city. From humble beginnings, born from the parents of sharecroppers in the South, the author presents a frank and real account of his life before and after his mother's death.

Mr. Shorter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Criminal Justice. Formerly employed as a Physical Security Specialist for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Protective Service Division, Mr. Shorter has composed hundreds of physical security surveys of major buildings in the Chicago Metropolitan area to mitigate possible security threats to the operations and tenants housed in government facilities.

So, sit back relax have a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of wine and be enlighten, inspired, motivated by today conversation and music…

Come join Theodore Shorter Jr. this evening airs live 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Central Time, USA --- Show Call-in#:  (347) 215-6487

East to West Coast Indie Band Dysfunctional Family Jazz Band

Dysfunctional Family Jazz
Band
Dysfunctional Family Jazz Band

Indie Band Dysfunctional Family Jazz Band members are Patty Carpenter {vocalist & keyboard}, Melissa Shetler – vocalist, Scotty Shetler {tenor sax, clarinet, baritone, penny whistle, and even mandolin}, and Travis Light {bass}.
This represents a snap shot of an extremely talented musical family blinding genres and fusions of Americana, Jazz, and Folk.   They have been compared to Billie Holiday, The Neville Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, The Levon Helm Band to name a few.

The musical mélange here puts the funk in dysfunctional. Patty studied Jazz at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with the great Archie Shepp and Max Roach, and was heavily influenced by many great women artists from Joan Baez and Roseanne Cash to Billie Holiday and Carmen McCrae. Scott was nearly born with a mandolin in his hand and is now a fantastic windbag. He has also scored big as a songwriter, co-writing the Jon Bon Jovi hit “Show Me the Way” with Mighty Sam McClain. Melissa danced to Coltrane from the moment she could walk and has a deep love of African and Latin music and harmony. Travis has had a fascinating journey to discovering his love of the bass guitar. The soulful, grooving result of this massive mix is kind of crazy, and kind of brilliant.

A very significant chapter of their history, one that has constant impact on their music and relationships today, was the 10-14 years spent living on Communal Farms. Described by Patty as “both really wonderful and really difficult,” the communal life deepened their dependence on each other practically and creatively and wove creative communication into the fabric of their family. Many of the themes of their music and activism are reflections of their life on the farm, including the priority of nature and the natural world and their passionate involvement in the anti-nuclear, peace, and environmental movements.

Come join us this reschedule 10/27/10 from to 11/3/10 Wednesday airs live from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Central Time, USA --- Show Call-in#:  (347) 215-6487

Lawrence C. Lucas President of Coalition of Minority Employees - Black Farmers Settlement and More…

Lawrence C Lucas

Lawrence C. Lucas President of Coalition of Minority Employees, Civil Rights Activist – Black Farmers Settlement and More…We’ll discuss the settlement, the root cause & resolution to the plight of not only Black Farmers, but the USDA and more… Some of you may already be aware of who Lawrence is, but for those who don’t here’s a brief snap shot.  Lawrence C. Lucas, President and founding member of the USDA Department of Agriculture's Coalition of Minority Employees ("The Coalition"), has served as their first elected President from 1994 to present.  Under President Lucas' strong leadership "The Coalition" has gained national recognition and credibility as one of the few premier multi-racial and multi-cultural civil rights organizations in the Federal Government. Mr. Lucas has revitalized and energized this organization. Under his leadership, this once Washington DC-based organization has grown to 38 Chapters nationwide.

Lawrence has stood in support of John Boyd Jr., President of the National Black Farmers Association.  Additionally, he has participated as a panelist along with Congresswomen and former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Maxine Waters, Congressman Bennie Thompson, and Virginia farmer Linwood Brown, on the Black Entertainment Television show "Our Voices" hosted by Ms. Bev Smith. His pro-active efforts to eliminate discrimination and demanding dignity, fairness, and respect for all people gained the attention of the White House, Members of Congress, and the media resulting in positive outcomes for USDA employees and Black farmers. In addition, he has testified before the Congressional Black Caucus, the House Agriculture Committee, and the House Committee on Government Affairs and Oversight. His outspoken and tireless support of Black farmers recently prevailed in their quest for justice, winning a financial settlement from USDA, after decades of discrimination.

So, sit back relax have a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of wine and enjoy an enlightening conversation & music…

New York Indie Jazz Saxophonist Cal Payne Featuring the “Cal Payne Project” - Oct 22,2010 http://ping.fm/yJ5pS

New York Indie Jazz Saxophonist Cal Payne Featuring the “Cal Payne Project”

Cal Payne

Brooklyn, New York Indie Jazz Saxophonist Cal Payne Featuring the “Cal Payne Project”.  We are in for a treat this evening with another gifted musician whose spirit glides with the sax in a way that touches your spirit.   Music, spirit, and soul transcend us to the universe in its language of healing… Cal Payne, is all about the music.  Far beyond the cliché and deeper than a casual flirtation with melody and sound, Cal Payne is a player to his core. With a jazz /instrumental style that combines elements of R&B, Latin, Fusion Jazz, and rock, his performance and presence invokes a combination of Grover Washington Jr. and Santana. Driven by an unceasing desire to compose and perform, he is most alive when engaged in the emotional and spiritual experience of making music. Music: this is the essence of the “Cal Payne Project”.

Born into the sonic assault and excitement of Brooklyn, NY, Cal Payne first expressed his passionate love of music as a vocalist at age 4. However, the jarring effects of adolescence made singing a frustrating challenge, and he became drawn to express himself as an instrumental player. Clarinet first occupied his hands at age 12, and then tenor saxophone at 14 and alto sax several years later. Keyboards joined his already impressive collection of skills at 18, with bass guitar and soprano saxophone not far behind. As his skills and talent grew, so did his passion and instinct, and from a young age it was clear that he was a thoughtful and passionate musician.

Among several qualities that distinguished him then, and continue to set him apart now, is a fascinating hybrid of technique and style due to his never having taken formal music lessons. The unique optimism and perception of music that is found in self-taught players marks his approach to music with an attention to what music can do and how many ways it can be approached. The result is a bold and unconventional improvisation style that goes for the guts and doesn’t hold back or play it safe, yet not at the cost of his connection with his audience. His performances are known to be accessible and evocative for the listeners while complex and challenging for those who seek to learn and perform with him.

After several years of developing and sharing his music in live performance, Cal Payne has set his sound down on record in The Cal Payne Project. This debut album presents the energy and vision of Payne’s fusion sound and certifies his credentials as a tireless, impeccable performer. The Cal Payne Project features a diverse group of musicians who have been playing with Payne since 2004, including his long-time musical partners Steve Crumpton on bass guitar and Michael Burke on acoustic and electric guitars, and with drums/percussion from Mark Manczuk and piano/keyboards from Jerome Korman.

Together they literally played through the storm, blazing through their recording sessions amidst the dead of Winter snow storms at Bennett Studios in Englewood, New Jersey under the guidance of multiple Grammy Award-winner Dae Bennett. Son of the legend Tony Bennett, Dae’s credits include his father’s recent Christmas album and comedian/banjo aficionado Steve Martin’s 2009 Grammy Award-winning bluegrass album The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo. The strength of this exceptional creative team and Payne’s innovative composition and improvisation style made The Cal Payne Project a striking debut.

So, sit back relax have a cup of coffee, tea, or a glass of wine enjoy some good conversation & music.   Hang out with us Friday, 10/22/10 airs live from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Central Time, USA / 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time, USA - Show Call-in#:  (347) 215-6487 evening soothe your spirit with healing music from “Cal Payne”…

New York Indie Artist “Tin Pan” Featuring their CD “Hound’s Tooth” and More…

Tin Pan
Tin Pan

New York Indie Artists “Tin Pan” Featuring their CD “Hound’s Tooth” and more.  Diversification of sound and influences is what this talented group delivers i.e. Alternative, Blues, Roots, Americana, Soul, and Jazz as an example.  This allows music to just flow with freedom, as it should through artists who know how to in fuse it to the next level.  Tin Pan’s music transcends time from then to now flowing seamlessly letting the spirit of music touch those that listen, this in and of it self is a gift.

Tin Pan members Jesse Selengut on trumpet, lead vocals and compositions, Clifton Hyde on guitar and hollerin’, Stefan Zeniuk on reeds and boy soprano vocals, and Peter “Baby Hands” Maness on bass and some singin’, Tin Pan evokes everything from Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong to Irving Berlin and Hoagy Carmichael. Founded in 2006 by Selengut, a long time New York based musician, and the curator of the Williamsburg Jazz Festival, the band sprung from what he calls, “a need for this kind of music.” He elaborates, “As soon as I started playing this music, it just felt so easy and natural. It’s simplicity demands that you be totally committed to it – there’s no hiding behind theory or pose.”

Finding players to fit his vision was challenging, but when Selengut met Mississippi native Clifton Hyde, who has played with Lou Reed, Debbie Harry, Blue Man Group and others, he knew he found the right man. “I auditioned about 25 different guitarists,” Jesse recalls, “and right away I knew Clifton was perfect. He’s experienced with blues and jazz but isn’t constrained by excessive training. And he has an intuitive understanding of what dancers need.” Stefan Zeniuk entered the picture through Clifton, bringing in a touch of the avant-garde to the proceedings. “I’m not even sure Stefan is that interested in jazz. He’s just got incredible energy – (saxophonist) Tim Berne was his babysitter. I think that affected him for life,” says Selengut with a laugh. Bassist Pete “Baby Hands” Maness was chosen because when we discovered that he could slap the bass, spin the bass, and get every girl’s phone number all in the same tune.

Nancy Sellers O'Bryan
Nancy Sellers O'Bryan

Nancy Sellers O’Bryan Author, Entrepreneur, Inspirational & Spiritual and So Much More…  Can we say awesome? Nancy is a wonderful testimony of someone who has survived life’s trials, tribulations, and storms.  One can have adversities in life and get sucked into the vortex or triumph towards another day another opportunity.  One can complain or rise above to tell and share the lessons learned.  Nancy’s sets the tone by example for all of the above.  So, if you need some inspiration stop by the show this evening to be encouraged…

Nancy’s inspiration and gifts are reflected through the books she’s written like
“Bondage to Freedom”, her latest “Through the Eyes of a Scored Woman”, “Yesterday or Today”, “Created Just for Me”, and “Preparing to Give Birth”.  Sharing thoughts, moments, & situations that are relatable, speaking for not only herself with her experiences but as a voice that can speak for those who can’t and/or do not know how…

Writing can do so much for someone who was never allowed to express her thoughts, pain, or cares as a child. Her inspiration to write came from the inability as a child to freely express her deepest thoughts, dreams, fears, and most of all LOVE.

I'm so proud of Nancy & congratulations are in order because recently "Nominated for a Black Essence Award".  Nancy will be Featured in December's Edition of You Magazine...

Alyssa Anjelica James

East & West Coast Indie Artist, Song Writer, Actress, Comedian Alyssa Anjelica James versatility is amazing and styling and voice is beautiful.  Alyssa is clearly globally and environmentally conscious and passionate.  Alyssa Anjelica James, a self-proclaimed tree hugger, was born in Harlem NYC and conceived in The Wasatch Mountains of Washington State-this prompted her father to give her the name Wasatchi.  Both the mountains and the city pulse though her artists veins as evident in her eclectic sound. On her song "Getcha Groove On" she is a rapper who spits with passion, urgency and ease, and yet on "Laughter In The Distance" a folk, R&B inflected ballad she sings with a sincere intimacy about brighter days to come. Then she takes another turn and writes.

"Warm Day" a modern day jazz standard that has an old timey sound both earthy and moody.  Alyssa began performing in musical theater in Manhattan at the age of thirteen playing a runaway teen in Elizabeth Swados' big hit “Runaways”.

She began doing stand-up in New York City in 1995, and joined two improv groups which led her to spots on TV shows for TV Guide Network, Discovery Channel and most recently landing the role of news anchor Kimberly Porter in the new Independent film called 'The Instant Messenger'.

Alyssa has continued to write and perform her own music which has found its place in the independent music community. Most recently, she was honored by Billboard for her song 'Subway Gospel' as being in the top 500 best new songwriters in the world. Her songs have been featured in numerous TV shows as well as Independent films.

A self-proclaimed tree hugger, James pulls inspiration from the everyday things people do but don't think about. She became passionate about living an eco-friendly and holistic lifestyle after being diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at age 19. After twelve years of hospitalizations and medications, James set out to heal herself naturally. 'Creating music and comedy really became therapeutic for me,' James says. I have to stay grounded and talk to that voice that child inside who's always telling me to run into the woods and I say not yet not yet!" Alyssa currently lives and performs in and around the Los Angeles area.

I’m thankful for everyday that God blesses me with, to continue traveling through life’s journey. It welcomes another day to nurture, develop and share the gifts that God has blessed and called me to share with the world... Our gifts aren’t for us to just hold unto ourselves, the components, ingredients that are incorporated with all the other Angels; He’s brought into the world for the overall benefit of our global community & family...

Nesheba’s “Moments of Thought” Series

I continue to pray that despite our current global economic times we must allow the ‘faith of mustard seed’ to hold our ground.   Hold fast to ‘when you’ve done all you can, continue to stand.’  God’s house is build upon a rock where, ‘the gates of hell shall not prevail.’  God is with us eternally to supply all our needs according to His riches and glory in heaven.  Yes, it appears to be scary and maybe even frightening, but ‘God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear, but of love, power, and a sound mind’…

We must be faithful in knowing that He will never leave us nor forsake us.  ‘When Jesus asked Peter to step outside of the boat, every time Peter’s faith hit a moment of doubt, he began to go under the water...  Our biggest lesson from this story is every time Peter’s ‘faith of a mustard seed’ was invoked he was able to continue walking towards Jesus...  This story teaches us so much about faith because sometime our faith gets weary, or we have moment when we say we’re going to let go and let God.  Yet, we go through a tog a war going back and forth trying to take back control.

Does this ever really work for us?  No, it actually delays our blessings.  Somehow, reflecting we know more than God, instead of just trusting in Him.  When we review our lives truthfully, we can feel His footprints, His presence throughout our lives.  If we reflect on people that have touched our lives, we know that He’s been there the entire time…

God’s inspiration through His actions and the angels that cross our paths as we travel through our journey, walking in our destiny, despite life’s trials & tribulations becomes an inspiration for others…

Inspiration that can awaken those who haven’t always been able to see their purpose, their destiny, their meaning in life can be driven by someone else’s spirit of inspiration.   Let’s continue to let our light from within shine bright, to enlighten the world around us…

Thank you, and Have a Blessed & Peaceful Day...
